DAWN WILL RISE Part 2: HEROES Ella had not liked the stranger at first, the woman who had arrived with her husband Mark. She spoke only German, prompted by her small son, Karl who reminded her of words like "thanks." Helga merely nodded, whispering "danke," which was so close to thanks that the family understood. Her clothes, though ripped and spark-spotted were European classy. Ella wore distressed jeans which were actually authentically ragged and some cheesy slogan tops such as: "Dogs drool, cats rule!" Slowly Ella began to empathise. The boy drew a child's picture of a house with beautiful trees all around - but all on fire. "Mein haus," Karl said, tears trickling onto his weetbix. "Nicht mohr - no house. No auto. Broken." Finally the baby bonded the two women. Helga was clearly unused to an ordinary Aussie style of living with not much use for etiquette and finer things.
