DAWN WILL RISE

Part 2: HEROES

Dawn risked a quick glance up at her teacher and was noticed immediately.
"Get back to your work, Dawn. You too, Rose." The woman had assumed Rose, Dawn's twin sister would glance around, but actually Rose was too afraid.
It was a strange classroom of five-year olds. They were not allowed to talk at all during lessons and the twins, insecure and new to the school were seated as far apart as possible.
All the children were demoralised and silent except for one boy who constantly "defied" Mrs. Peters. He seemed to get a smack from an old-fashioned ruler every day. Charlie was just unable to remember anything from one day to the next!
Finally one of the children told his dad and showed him the red marks on his legs. He was furious. "This is like something that happened in my granddad's day!" He complained to the principal.
Mrs. Peters overheard Dawn telling Charlie about flying in a plane one day. The teacher was smarting over a reprimand from the principal and resolved to teach Rose and Charlie a lesson.
