DAWN WILL RISE
Part 2: HEROES
Then as dawn lit up the sky and the shadows faded, Ella felt her little girls each holding her legs, but they were quietly crying. Then her sons came. "Dad's truck is burnt," cried Simon, "and so is daddy," added his brother David. "Mum, quick, get Dr. Archer!"
He thrust his phone impatiently into her hands. "Can't you see? The lady's bleeding and her boy is crying, but the baby isn't doing anything!! Hurr up, mum!" He stamped his foot and both boys shook her. Startled, she called Dr. Bailey - and an ambulance.
Mark opened the cab door and almost fell. "Ella, I love you. Get help!"
He sank down, leaning about the damaged truck, his eyes closed.
He had kept driving all night through smoke patches and raging fires. "David, son, get the boss. You know the number. Tell him the road is blocked now."
Encouraged, David grabbed his phone. Ella was kneeling, clutching Mark gently while they waited once again for help. "Why us?" she thought. "Why is it so hard for us? Is it like this for anyone else?" She was tired, but still Mark was alive. She went to help the woman and her children, feeling only compassion.
